FREEDOM SHRINE

What is a Freedom Shrine?
A Freedom Shrine is a collection of up to 30 historic documents that helped to form the many wonderful freedoms that we enjoy in America today.

Who began the concept?
Exchange Clubs first adopted the Freedom Shrine as a project in 1947.

How is it normally displayed?
As wall plaques placed in schools and public buildings across America by a local Exchange Club. Thousands have been installed nationally.

What is the purpose?

For nearly all of us the precious gift of freedom has come free of charge.  But for others, there has been a price.  Perhaps you know someone who has paid or is paying for our freedom – a soldier, sailor, marine, airman or a guardsman. The men and women in our armed forces are one example of how some people dedicate a part of their lives to protect our freedom. Our history tells us others have also paid a high price.  Thousands of Americans sacrificed all they had – their homes, property and lives – in the pursuit of human freedom. The Freedom Shrine exists so that Americans, especially young Americans to whom freedom comes automatically, can see for themselves how freedom was purchased for us and to better realize that our freedom was earned at a great cost by thousands and thousands of people over a span of hundreds of years.

Where is the closest Freedom Shrine to me?
G.A. Stetson Middle School located in West Chester, PA (on Route 202 – just north of Route 926). Their Shrine is displayed in the library hallway. Read about the Stetson Middle School Freedom Shrine Rededication Ceremony (2/09).

In addition to the G.A. Stetson Middle School Freedom Shrine, the Exchange Club of West Chester is working hand in hand with the Turk’s Head Exchange Club to install a new Freedom Shrine at Bayard Rustin Middle School. The April 24th dedication ceremony is tentatively set for 9:30am.

What can I do?
Make a donation to the Americanism Committee of the Exchange Club. This will be used to support our club’s ongoing Freedom Shrine Rededication Projects and new installations throughout Chester County. You or your organization may desire recognition with a public ceremony – including pictures and a plaque. Contact the Americanism Committee Chairman, Pete Adams at 484-832-6708 to learn more. You can volunteer time on our Freedom Shrine Committee and help to create and promote an inspirational ceremony. You can also attend an Exchange Club meeting to learn more about one of America’s finest service clubs.
